Thoughts after the JCPS meeting on June 12, 2025

by

It was very exciting to have a 40+ attendance at the first general meeting of JCPS. Many thanks to all who made the effort to come and participate in the discussion. We are off to a very strong and positive start that will allow citizens to have a voice in county government.

The topic of the meeting, “Zoning”, is one that has been very vexing in Jefferson County for the last few years. Our Regional Planning Commission, a seven-member board, is an appointed body. Members include five citizens and two elected county commissioners. The board also sits as the BZA (Board of Zoning Appeals) when necessary. The BZA board consists of the five citizen members of the commission. All the members of the Regional Planning Commission are appointed by the county mayor. The mayor has complete control over who serves on this body.

The ongoing problems with zoning were apparent at the meeting, with many of the attendees describing how decisions have had adverse effects on their property and communities. Attendees participated by listing issues and concerns. These will be used as a guide for the JCPS board going forward.

It is obvious that zoning is not working in Jefferson County.  The following are suggestions for ways to attack this problem.

  • Attend the Regional Planning Commission(zoning) meeting on June 24,2025. The meeting is at 6:00 pm at the county courthouse. Come and make your voices heard.
  • Check our website at https://jeffcntypreservation.com/ for more news. We will be posting current information as needed.
  • Plan to attend our next JCPS meeting on September 18, 2025 at 6:00 pm at the Jefferson County Library. Bring a neighbor or friend.
